Fitness Gift Guide For Women (Apparel)

Disclaimer: this post contains affiliate links

Can you believe the holiday season is upon us? Because I can’t! I have a few holiday related things up my sleeve for you all, starting with 6 gift guides coming at you this week and next. I figured we will all start shopping soon, and why not get inspired OR find ideas for what YOU might want to add to your own wish list ;)

Here are my topics for the gift guides after this one:

  • Fitness gift guide (apparel) for men
  • Stocking stuffers (health/fitness/running related)
  • Health and fitness gift guide (think tech, appliances, food, etc.)
  • Gift Guide for Runners
  • My Favorite Makeup Gift Guide

Today’s gift guide will focus on fitness apparel for women. Whether you’re shopping for yourself, your mom, your spouse, your sister, your BFF…you will find some ideas below.

Holida Gift Guide: Fitness Apparel For Women

Okay let’ get started…

Forever 21 Activewear - Heathered Capri Leggings

Heathered Athletic Capri Leggings (Forever 21) – $12.90

I love that these are heathered and high-waisted. Forever 21′s activewear is actually surprisingly good, and their heathered stuff is really soft. This is perfect for winter workouts!

Forever 21 Activewear - Pullover

 Drawstring Cowl Neck Pull-Over (Forever 21) – $22.90

I love cowl neck pull-overs! So comfortable and cozy. Perfect for warming up or just day-to-day wear.

Nike Winter Running Gear

 Nike Dri-FIT Headband & Running Gloves Set – $30.00

This will probably be in my running guide as well but a headband and gloves set is perfect for anyone who plans on exercising outdoors this winter.

Nike Pro Warm Running Gear

Nike Pro Hyperwarm Top – $80

Nike hyperwarm tops are my favorite winter tops. They are so warm (same with their tights) and I use them for running, sitting out at football games…basically anywhere where I will be cold. They make a great base layer as well to add lighter tops over them for those bitter, cold runs.

Old-Navy-Activewear

Burnout Racer Back Tank (Old Navy) – $10

Winter = more indoor workouts. This tank is perfect for that! PS – all Old Navy activewear is currently up to 50% off online. Check it out!

Other places I shop for activewear also include T.J. Maxx (you can find really warm fleece-lined leggings here) and Marshall’s. I’m telling you though, you can find a lot of apparel (and inexpensive at that) at Forever 21.

Where do you shop for yourself or the fitness lover in your life?

Do you prefer capris or shorts for gym workouts in the winter (or you don’t care)? I like capris so I’m not AS cold on the walk from my car to the gym lol

RBX Activewear at T.J. Maxx

I’ve written about RBX Activewear before…and it is still one of my favorite brands for workout gear. I bought two new pieces recently that I wanted to share with you.

But first…can we talk about how marathon training officially started yesterday??? Who else started training for Chicago Marathon, or will start soon? I’m excited that I will be working with Coach Marc again, though also equally as nervous. He just sent me this email today:

We’re going to totally mix it up – some day hard hills, some days long repeats…and then a combination of all of them.  The mileage will be comfortably uncomfortable and you’ll be tired.  All the time.  It’ll be so important for you to take care of yourself and give yourself every opportunity to race fast at Chicago.

I lifted for the first time in months yesterday and was sore before I even went to bed last night. Woke up super sore. Sad thing is I did 3 sets of KB single leg deaflits + rows, KB squat, KB sumo squat, KB overhead press and cable leg kickbacks. All with like 15 pounds. My hamstrings and inner thighs are killing me. But gotta get back into it…I need a PR this fall! *knock on wood*

Okay anyway, let’s get into RBX Activewear. You can find some of their pieces at T.J. Maxx for really great prices. Both my top and bottom in these pictures were $9.99.

I took these photos on Sunday at the NYRR Retro 4 Miler in Central Park (which was awesome by the way!).

On a budget? Try shopping at T.J. Maxx for RBX Activewear pieces!

The shorts are colorblocked with grey and green (had to match with my Tiux socks!). The main thing I love about these shorts are that they’re high-waisted. So they aren’t falling down or riding up.

On a budget? Try shopping at T.J. Maxx for RBX Activewear pieces!

The top is a very similar material to lululemons swiftly tanks, so very soft and comfortable. One thing I didn’t like is that it’s a bit low cut for me in the front, so I had to wear a higher cut sports bra. Otherwise, it would not be a pretty sight while running ;)

The front and back are ruched, and the shirt itself is on the longer side, which I also like. Because of the ruching, it is more fitted towards the waist, so you don’t have to worry about your shirt flapping in the wind or riding up.

On a budget? Try shopping at T.J. Maxx for RBX Activewear pieces!

And gotta end with a running action shot…

Head over to T.J. Maxx or Marshall’s and check out RBX Activewear. I know in the past I have said I don’t like tanks for running, but I think I am a fan now! I still need something to wipe my sweat, but tanks do make me feel a bit cooler than t-shirts.

Up next, race wise, is the Oakley Mini 10K this Saturday. Anyone else running?

Where do you shop when you’re on a budget?

My Forever 21 Activewear Picks for May

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. Forever 21 did not sponsor or compensate me for this post; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Since my posts on affordable workout clothes are some of my most popular, I decided to feature my picks each month. This month, I’ll show you two pieces from the Forever 21 activewear line that I just bought and love!

I have to be in the right mood to shop at Forever 21. I feel like their hangers are always so tightly squeezed together, it’s so hard to actually browse through clothes. I discovered their activewear line a few months ago and really liked the quality, especially for the low prices! Some of their stuff feels like the same type of material as a lululemon swiftly shirt…I actually wanted to buy one to show you for this post but they didn’t have my size :( This is one of the ones I’m talking about.

I found the last of this tank top I’m wearing in the photos below, and really comfortable spandex shorts. The shorts don’t ride up much, and are such a soft material. I love the wide waistband and waistband details as well! Check out my photoshoot and I’ll link to the items at the end :)

I love this last photo…my hair – what is it doing??

The pink run top is really soft and I think will be perfect for summer races. Unfortunately, I can’t find it online, but here is a similar option that says “See You At The Finish Line.”

Here are the colorblocked shorts in both gray (like I’m wearing) and black. The shorts are $12.90, and the top is also $12.90…can’t beat that!

On a budget? Try the Forever 21 Activewear line!

I think next month I’ll show my workout finds from T.J. Maxx or Marshall’s. Sometimes you can find great deals there as well.

Have you shopped at Forever 21 for workout clothes? Where is your favorite place to shop?

How To Organize Your Workout Gear

If you’re like me, your fitness stuff makes up about 90% of your wardrobe (and laundry). I don’t really have a “system” on organizing all of it, which is what inspired me to write this post and see what others are doing. My system right now is just having a drawer for gym shirts, shorts and sports bras. And it ends up getting pretty messy since I dig through it each day to find the write outfit. So the research commenced to get some good tips from other runners and fitness lovers! So let’s talk about how to organize your workout gear:

How To Organize Your Workout Gear

Tanks & Shirts

Use shower hooks. A great idea I saw on Instagram is from @kariofitness:

A photo posted by Kari Merrill (@kariofitness) on

She uses shower curtain hooks to put on hangers and hang her tanks and shirts. Another instagrammer commented that in order for them to not slide around, she puts the hooks through rubber bands on the hanger. Genius I say! Easy enough to get shirts off the hooks and put them back on.

Stack vertically instead of horizontally. Why have I never thought of this? This is a great tip from Running On Lentils!

This will totally solve my problem of digging through my drawers, because I can just grab and go. Click through on the photo to read her full post on organization.

Roll up your shirts. If you ran out of drawer space, you can use storage bins for your shirts. I knew rolling clothes up = less space taken up, because I always do this when I pack for a trip, but never thought to do it with my workout gear. This is a tip recommended by MCM Mama Runs and Confessions of a Mother Runner. Here’s MCM Mama’s photo:

Capris/Pants/Shorts

Basically the same tenants can apply here – roll them up in bins, store in your drawers or hang them. Some people use the pants hangers for their capris but I hate unclipping and clipping them in. I think for me, the best thing will be stacking vertically in my shelves.

Headbands

Use an over the door rack. You know, the ones that are for shoes or beauty? Store your headbands in those in order to quickly access them.

Use a bin or bag. Running on Lentils suggests having a separate bag for headbands and hats/visors. Yes, you might have to dig around a bit, you’ll know where they are and you can keep them hidden away in your closet.

How cool is this idea I found on Pinterest? (click through didn’t lead me to a website so I don’t know what the source is, sorry!)

145ccee743c67893257593b96e2997b2
I found this one on Pinterest too from The Scacci House:

headbands

I think that might be the winner for me! A ribbon stuck to the wall with some clothespins = genius idea to hang your headbands, and other stuff too like gloves!

A random tip I liked from Straighten Up With Kristen (full article below) is to create gym outfits and put them together in your drawers that way. And to have an extra outfit and sneakers in your car at all times. I can’t count how many times I’ve been out and want to go to the gym but don’t have my gear, or go to the gym and realize I forgot something like a sports bra.

Thanks to these bloggers for being organized (unlike me) and sharing their organization tips!

Here are a few other helpful links that might help you with spring cleaning:

What tips would you add on organizing your workout gear?

Are you generally an organized person? Because I’m definitely not :-P

Fitness Apparel Under $25

I’ve written about fitness apparel on a budget before…from Forever21, Old Navy & T.J. Maxx. It doesn’t have to cost you a lot to get some cute workout clothes! The other good thing about not spending a lot is that if you get a rip or a run in your clothes, you won’t stress over it.

Since it’s the holiday season, you may be looking for last minute gifts for your fitness or running fanatic, or you may just want to treat yourself! My gift to myself last week was the limited edition red lipstick from MAC called 5 Alarm. I love it. It’s glossy and sheer so you can do one layer for just a bit of red or layer it on for a more dramatic look. I decided I’m going to get back into doing my makeup/trying new looks. Is that something you’d be interested in reading about? Such as makeup reviews, etc.?

Anyway, back to fitness apparel…here are my picks for items under $25…can’t get much better than that!

Forever 21 Activewear

Seamless Athletic top – $15.90 (Forever 21)

This top reminds me of the long sleeve Swiftly tops from lululemon. No seams means no itchiness or chafing!

Merino Wool Running Socks

Merino Wool Running Socks – $15.95 (Darn Tough)

I actually need a pair of these myself. Hey, Kara Goucher told me to run in wool socks in the winter, so that’s what I’m going to do ;)

Forever 21 Activewear

Seamless Athletic Leggings – $11.90 (Forever 21)

To go with the seamless top. These look like they would be super comfy, and I’m all about high waisted leggings.

Victoria's Secret Leggings

Victoria’s Secret Leggings – $19.50 (on sale)

These are actually originally $29.99, though some of their leggings with printed waistbands or that are reversible are more. AND Victoria’s Secret is having a 30% off all leggings sale, and free shipping on orders over $40. If you’re looking for a good pair of thick leggings definitely check out these out. They have a thick waistband so it doesn’t awkwardly cut into to you. I actually prefer these over my lululemon wunderunders now. I paid over $80 for wunderunders and on the 3rd or so wear they started pilling. Awesome. Ok, /rant. ;)

Running Earbuds

Dynamic Sports Earbuds – $5 (Five Below)

Okay, this isn’t technically apparel, but it’s pretty awesome. I found these at my local Five Below and love them. If you’re like me, you lose your headphones a lot or only use them to sweat, to why spend a ton of money on them? These are similar to Yurbuds in that they do not budge in your ear. That piece of rubber that sticks up goes into the crease of your ear and they don’t move at all. Trust me, I hate earbuds because they ALWAYS fall out due to how much I sweat…these are awesome.

Is there anything you know of/love that is under $25? Leave a comment and share!

Have you gifted yourself anything this holiday season?

Old Navy Activewear Wish List

There’s a great sale going on at Old Navy now until Wednesday…up to 50% off everything! So it’s time to go through and see what my picks are for activewear. Now that it’s getting chillier, I need some new capri workout pants. My favorite ones I own are from Old Navy and have lasted me about 3 years.

This is not workout gear, but I really want a puffer vest! Now that there’s a sale, I think I’m going to order this one - 20 bucks!

Puffer Vest

Okay anyway, let’s take a look at my picks for Old Navy Activewear:

Old Navy Activewear

Mesh Top – $10

10 bucks for a lightweight, wicking workout top? I am ready to head to Old Navy after work today.

Old Navy Activewear

Half-Zip Pullover – $20

I actually own this but the full zip version and it is so comfy. I love the thumbholes. This was actually the first thing I bought from Old Navy from their active line.

Old Navy Activewear

Semi-Fitted Tank – $9 (Gray one is $4.99!)

If you need a simple tank or singlet, then you can’t go wrong with this deal. I wish I liked wearing tank tops but I just can’t. I need my sleeves to wipe off my sweat – hot, I know.

Old Navy Activewear

Mesh-Panel Compression Capris – $25

These are the capris I have that have lasted me 3 years. I love them. Mine don’t have this side pocket though which I would love. The pants also have a small pocket in the waistband perfect for your key or GU.

Old Navy Activewear

Yoga Leggings – $20

I love my wunderunders from lululemon but they’re pretty pricey. I’d love a pair of patterned leggings like these…as long as they’re not see-through!

I think next week I’ll do a Forever 21 list because I’m perusing their website right now and see a few things a I want…including a high-neck sports bra. Where has this been for me? Does anyone else have the issue of cleavage with sports bras?? No, just me?

Where is your favorite place to shop for workout clothes? What items do you splurge on?

How To Wash Your Workout Clothes

I have way more workout clothes than normal clothes. My laundry days consist of probably 90% workout clothes. I love that I work in an athletic office and as a coach so I can wear fitness apparel to work too. Though now it sucks because when I put on jeans I feel so constricted, blah.

Anyway, it’s important to take care of your workout gear if you want them to last. I used to just throw them all in the wash with my normal clothes and call it a day. Now I’m careful to wash them how they’re supposed to be washed, and hang dry them.

I learned key things once I started working with Raw Athletics, a company that puts out a natural sports detergent and a sports spray (for your funky smelling shoes). I actually also wrote up a post on their products, so if you’re interested in trying it out, read it here!

I mean, did you know you shouldn’t wash your workout clothes with things like jeans and towels? I definitely didn’t.

How To Wash Your Workout Clothes

So now I’m going to share a few tips I learned from Raw Athletics on how to wash your workout clothes :)

Like I mentioned above, you probably already know to wash your athletic wear in a cold wash and air dry. For some reason I used to wash in hot because I figured a scalding hot wash would kill all the bacteria and odor. Most performance apparel laundry instructions state to use a cold wash.

Don’t wash with abrasive fabrics. This includes jeans, towels, and anything with zippers. I made the mistake of doing this with a lululemon top and something got caught and pulled out a thread. Very annoying when you pay $$$ for lululemon stuff! Besides that, washing with other clothes can cause pilling and fraying.

Use powdered detergent. Raw Athletics does a good job of explaining this so I’m just going to quote them here:

Most brands, especially Nike Dri-Fit, recommend using a powdered detergent because powdered surfactants gently yet very effectively remove soils and debris from the fabric much better than liquid surfactants, without leaving behind any residue.

Don’t use detergents with fragrances. Like Tide Sport or Febreze. The smell clogs up the pores of your clothes, which leads to even smellier clothes as time goes on (from your sweat being stuck on the fabric). You’d think using fragrances would HELP the whole smelly clothes issue, but that’s not the case! Brands like Nike and lululemon even put on their instructions to avoid using fabric softeners.

Turn clothes inside out. According to a few brands’ washing instructions, you should turn your clothes inside out before washing. I actually did not know that until I started writing this post! Good to know. Doing so reduces fading of colors and also reduces pilling.

Random side note (speaking of pilling) – I just bought a pair of lululemon Wunder Unders last weekend, and the inside groin/crotch area is already starting to pill. WTF?? When something costs upwards of $90, shouldn’t this not happen? Or is this normal? Anyone else have this issue?

Anyway…those are just a few tips to help you out on your next laundry day. I’ve noticed that once I started taking better care of my garments, they lasted longer and stayed in decent condition. Also, once I started using Raw Athletics, it really helped take that awful sweaty smell out. Or you know how sometimes you wash your clothes, but then as soon as you sweat in them they stink? That would always happen to me.

If you want to read other reviews of their products, you can find one here from MCM Mama Runs, and one from The Active Guy. Feel free to leave any questions below!

Oh also, here are washing guides specific to each popular fitness brand, brought to you by Raw Athletics:

Do you take care of your workout clothes? Do you follow the washing instructions or just throw everything in together?

Football Fan Fitness Apparel

Football season is here!! Whether you like pro or college football, I bet you like wearing your gear to support your team. Maybe you even like wearing it while working out like I do.

Football Fan Fitness Apparel

Here are a few items I found for those of you in the NJ/NY area who may root for the Giants, Jets, and of course, my alma mater Rutgers ;)

Nike Women’s Short Sleeve New York Giants V-Neck T-Shirt – $32.00

A Dri-Fit t-shirt to wear to the game AND a workout/running shirt all in one ;)

Nike Men’s Short Sleeve Dri-Fit T-Shirt – $28.00

Dan loves the Giants and their old logo so this is perfect for him. Perhaps an anniversary gift for this October?

Nike New York Giants Women’s Tempo Performance Running Shorts – $27.99

Love these! Although I mainly wear spandex shorts now, I have a ton of these Nike shorts. They were my first real running shorts.

New York Jets Elastic Headband- $9.99 (set of 3)

Why not rep your team with a tiny headband while working out?

Nike Women’s New York Jets Warp Tank Top – $32.00

Although I’m not a Jets fan, I do like the lettering on this!

Rutgers Under Armour Women’s Mesh Tank – $19.99

I need this. This is from the Rutgers Barnes & Noble site. I always go into that store and want to buy everything in site. Anyone else feel that way with their university bookstore?

Under Armour Women’s Sonic Shorty – $39.98

Um…yes please? Like I said above, I prefer spandex shorts to looser shorts. I hate when you’re running and shorts start bunching up in the middle. I love the “R” on the waistband!

There you have it…a short little roundup of fitness apparel you can wear while also supporting your team. I usually wear workout apparel to football games anyway (Dan and I are Rutgers season ticket holders) because I like being comfy while tailgating and at the game. When it’s cooler out, I’m all about the yoga pants and big sweatshirts!

What team do you root for? What’s your alma mater – are we rivals? ;)

Target Activewear Wishlist

I love that companies like Target and Old Navy are making great workout gear that won’t break the bank. I used to run or go to the gym in just a random t-shirt and Soffe shirts. Case in point:

47098_10100185785077099_7268830_n

But nowadays I like buying cute athletic wear that is actually meant for exercising. I need that dry-wicking material!

I was looking through Target’s website and picked out a few items I’d like to add to my closet. I really like the light blue double layer tank! Though I need more support for things like running, it’d be perfect for lifting days. Here’s what I liked:

target-workout-tankCowl Neck Layered Tank – $22.99

target-yoga-tankDouble Layer Tank – $22.99

target-activewear1/4 Zip Pull Over – $19.98

target-running-shortsWoven Short With Compression Shorts – $18.99

Recently I haven’t been able to run in anything other than spandex shorts. Does anyone else wear flowy shorts and they ride up in the crotch? So annoying. Any suggestions for spandex shorts? I love lululemon but would like something a bit less expensive…

Where is your favorite place to shop for work out clothes?

Do you prefer tank tops or shirts with sleeves? I like sleeves so I can wipe my sweat ;)

Forever 21 Activewear

This past weekend I was shopping in Forever 21 when I saw these shorts:

I thought, “Oh these are actually cute, and feel comfortable…and only 15 bucks!” In the past, I have looked through their workout clothes but not really been impressed. I left the store and thought nothing of it.

Then, the next day my sister and I went back to another mall, and were in Forever 21 again. I was curious about their activewear so I went to that section. I found a ton of items that I loved and all were in the $10-$20 range! A lot of you liked my T.J. Maxx Activewear post, so I figured why not cover my Forever 21 finds too? If I didn’t know Forever 21 had gym clothes, then others might not…plus who doesn’t love a good bargain?

So after doing a little online shopping, here are my favorite finds.

*This post has been edited since the original. Some of the items have sold out so I went and tried to find similar items.

leggings

Seamless Performance Leggings – $10.80

shorts

Side Pocket Skinny Workout Shorts – $12.80

They had these in the store, and I can attest to the fact that they are pretty soft!I loved the wide waistband, but really loved the side pocket. I have a pair of lululemon leggings I wear to the gym all the time because it’s the only pair with a pocket for my phone. I like to listen to my phone while I workout, so this is perfect!

shirt

Moisture Management Workout Tee – $12.80

tanktop

Color Pop Workout Tank – $17.80

I love the back of this tank top! May have to order this one…

leggingstribal

Tribal Print Workout Leggings – $19.80

Because who doesn’t like colorful leggings for running? Or the gym?

yoga shorts

Heathered Colorblocked Yoga Shorts – $12.80

I have been loving spandex shorts lately as opposed to normal running shorts. If I can find a pair that is just as comfortable as my lululemon ones, then that is a win! I love the color and pattern on these.

I’m all about find cute gym outfits to wear. I feel better when I am wearing something I like, than when I’m wearing a random, frumpy t-shirt and shorts (because I forgot to do laundry). The quality on the clothes I saw in the Forever 21 store was pretty good, though I haven’t worn any of their stuff yet, so I can’t say for sure how they will feel when you’re actually working out or running. I will get back to you on that!

Which of these is your favorite?

Have you shopped at Forever 21 for workout clothes? Where else do you find your workout gear?
